Unbelievable Scene at #OccupyChapelHill

Ok, Chapel HIll is about the least dangerous, least violent place I’ve ever been.  It is made up of families, children but mostly the University Students, Faculty and Staff.  This is just an unbelievable scene to see police with assault rifles on Franklin Street!!!

One hears Chants of “Shame.” and “Takes a lotta guts to pull an assault rifle on a little girl.  Who do they serve – Well’s Fargo.  Who do they Protect – Well’s Fargo.”

Police The Army of the Rich!!!

Police The Army of the Rich!!!

Police The Army of the Rich!!!

“Shame!!!  Shame!!!”

A group from the Anarachist Book Fair (not entirely affiliated with Occupy Chapel Hill) decided they would occupy a building on Franklin St. that has been vacant for at least a decade. This building, known as the “Chrysler Building”, is used by its renter as a tax write off and left abandoned.

I happened to be grabbing dinner when I saw cops block off the street. I knew they were probably raiding this site so I headed down to see what was going on. I only had a cell phone with me so that is all I was able to shoot with. The Police raided with assault rifles drawn (which was clearly overkill). I didn’t capture the initial breach, but that apparently came with officers in a white unmarked vehicle. I am not sure if I agree with this group of protester’s tactics in taking the building, but the response was too much. They held it since yesterday prior to the raid which came in the 5pm hour.

A Poem I dedicate to Bruce Martin Whealton Jr.

Demonostrating how special Bruce Martin Whealton is…

A thousand fair suitors all stab at your heart
Those poets of movement and jockeys of art
The high-volume vendors who hustle romance
Splashing their canvas with color and dance

The blasters of trumpets, gold banners unfurled
They offer lush gardens in glistening worlds
Yes, bearers of torches and carvers of stone
Who whisper their sonnets and surrender their thrones

And there in your doorway, no shadow is cast
No lingering voices, no ghosts from the past
Just a cluster of walls, and a window of pain
Collecting the heartache like droplets of rain

Still I stand before you, with palms to the sky
No gold in my pocket, no thorn in my side
And all I can offer, where words have no place
Is a body that trembles, and this love that awaits

Defining a Website in Dreamweaver

This video deals with defining a website in Dreamweaver.  When defining websites, as opposed to creating a document in a wordprocessor, you deal with multiple files that come together to define what you see on the web page.  These files include the html (officially it’s been popular to use a varient of HTML known as XHTML 1.1 – extensible HTML), images, style sheets (CSS – Cascading Style Sheets) that define the look and feel of the site, javascript for interacting with the user and for browser based effects.  In addition, many websites have code that runs on the server.

For this reason, it is important to define a site with a particular structure.

Becoming what they call a Liberal

I remember the epiphany that hit me as an undergrad student at Georgia Institute of Technology, during my early years.  I started out that year and previously, as a conservative, having voted for Reagan and identifying myself as a Republican.  Indeed, Engineers ( I was majoring in Electrical Engineering) are somewhat conservative in general.  Yet, it was a self-proclaimed “bleeding heart” liberal that helped me to define and discover who I really was, who I really am, what I believe, and what kind of values and morals I have.

It just hit me, that the best way of describing myself was as a “bleeding heart” liberal.  What really resonated within me, to the core of my being, and what I realized was “right” in my world view, was just that, a great sense of compassion, my heart going out to the vulnerable… a profound desire to care for, protect, and defend others that were vulnerable or those who were hurting or in need.  It seemed like the most profound truth to me.  I am well aware of the arguments against liberalism, or a politics or governance, or set of laws, described by these terms “liberal,” or “left,” or even more derogatory terms like “leftist” and it’s use to connect people with evil forms of communism.  However, these arguments against liberalism, just never seemed logical or right to me.  The assumptions made or the conclusions drawn by the right, or the conservative approach, just did not ring true with me as being right, or just or even logical in terms of the arguments made.

However, the “bleeding heart” part of me, came from a deeply ingrained and passionate desire to protect or see that people are protected.  I’ll continue with this in the next post.

Natural Human Rights

Recently, someone sent me a link to a web link to a website that that discusses the “Universal Declaration of Human Rights.”  They have a very nicely done video that presents the history of how the Universal Declaration of Human Rights came into being, including historical efforts in different countries to establish laws and doctrines that define and protect these rights.  This video is a great introduction to the ideas that define human rights, including the definition and meaning of various concepts such as what is defined by the word “human”, the word “rights” and the phrases “human rights” and “natural human rights.”

So the idea is that Natural Human Rights arose out of the observation that people naturally followed certain laws even if they weren’t told to do so.  These were called “natural rights.”  It started with “Cyrus the Great” as stated on the webpage of the United for Human Rights website.  Quoting from the website just mentioned, it reads, “In 539 B.C., the armies of Cyrus the Great, the first king of ancient Persia, conquered the city of Babylon. But it was his next actions that marked a major advance for Man. He freed the slaves, declared that all people had the right to choose their own religion, and established racial equality. These and other decrees were recorded on a baked-clay cylinder in the Akkadian language with cuneiform script.

Known today as the Cyrus Cylinder, this ancient record has now been recognized as the world’s first charter of human rights.”

It is interesting and one can be proud as an American that we are part of this history of establishing, declaring and defending a set of human rights.  These rights were declared and defined in our Declaration of Independence, our Constitution and our Bill of Rights.  The United States had declared their independence from the British because, while the British king had recognized the idea of human rights, the United States felt that they must take a stronger stance in defending a set of human rights for our people (or for all people, at least in principal).

What does this mean, if you think about it?  Well, it means that people fought and gave their lives for these principles, for these rights, in America, and elsewhere as well, of course.  Though, the US Constitution is the oldest written national constitution in use.  From this beginning, until now, this has been a defining characteristic of who we are as a country and nation.  Presidents are sworn to defend this constitution.  One can say that one loves his or her country to the extent to which he or she believes and supports all of these “rights,” because they do define America and who we are.  While the Universal Declaration of Human Rights is not a defining characteristic of America, many of the rights in the Universal Declaration are in our Constitution and Bill of Rights.

It has been very perplexing to me to notice that at times, those people or groups, who defend and advocate for these rights, are viewed in a negative light and given negative labels.  These are the rights that define us as a country.  It seems to be a given that if you love your country you will defend the principles upon which that country is founded and defined.  It would make more sense to say that an organization like the American Civil Liberties Union is a defender of these same values and beliefs – the same values that define us as a country.  That truly is something that is perplexing to me.  Even my left, logical brain, sees contradictions in the way that some people and groups have been viewed, or scorned, for believing in these values and advocating for the defense of these values, or rights.  There will always be crises but immediately afterward, we as a nation do realize who we really are and what defines us… that there was always good and moral reasons for establishing these rights for all people and that by writing it into a constitution we can be guided in determining the just thing to do, the best moral decision based on these rights, these principles.

As I had mentioned, it puzzles me when I notice that some of these rights that define us as a country, are found to be inconvenient, disagreeable or when they are challenged and that two people who equally love their country could be on opposite sides of the fence when it comes to the defense of these rights.   Specifically, I’d like to refer to the following rights (I will refer to items from the Universal Declaration of Human Rights with the assumption that one can find a similar right specified in our Constitution or Bill of Rights) :

1) Article 5.  No one shall be subjected to torture or to cruel, inhuman or degrading treatment or punishment.

2) Article 9. No one shall be subjected to arbitrary arrest, detention or exile. and related to this is,

3) Article 10. Everyone is entitled in full equality to a fair and public hearing by an independent and impartial tribunal, in the determination of his rights and obligations and of any criminal charge against him.

I would find it highly immoral to deny any of those rights.  Yet, our nation did these things.  My left, logical, brain says that is and was morally wrong and unjust.  It is embarrassing for anyone who loves America to realize that this did happen and was done.

4) Article 11 – 1 Everyone charged with a penal offence has the right to be presumed innocent until proved guilty according to law in a public trial at which he has had all the guarantees necessary for his defense.

5) What is most important to be noticed about Article 19, is that this right of freedom of expression, exists regardless of frontiers.  People have gotten angry at those who would protest their countries actions, “on foreign soil” as if that was not their right.  It is, though indeed, one might not find it spelled out in our constitution but neither is it’s opposite:  “Everyone has the right to freedom of opinion and expression; this right includes freedom to hold opinions without interference and to seek, receive and impart information and ideas through any media and regardless of frontiers.”

6) Article 22: “Everyone has the right to social security…”

7) Article 23: “Everyone has the right to work, to free choice of employment, to just and favorable conditions of work and to protection against unemployment… and Everyone has the right to form and to join trade unions for the protection of his interests.”

8) Article 25: “Everyone has the right to a standard of living adequate for the health and well-being of himself and of his family, including food, clothing, housing and medical care and necessary social services, and the right to security in the event of unemployment, sickness, disability, widowhood, old age or other lack of livelihood in circumstances beyond his control.”

9) It wasn’t clear that any of these specifically define a right to protection against unlawful search and seizure.

I believe in these rights because I think they are necessary for justice and a moral society.  Defending and supporting these rights is an expression of righteous behavior and belief.  It seems to me that most if not all of these reflect the values of America and as such define who we are as a nation.  I believe there are good reasons for all of these rights.

Fox News – Follow-up

Ok, so if I didn’t already Bill O’Reilly was a malicious, out of control, pathelogical liar, I do now know this without a doubt.  After the interview with the man who happened to disagree with him on the war, Bill is caught using profanity and threats.  My heart goes out to this guy who was not abused by Bill O’Reilly and attacked. They guy, Bill O’Reilly,  is like a monster and they let him do that stuff?   What is the deal?

The guy probably felt a moral obligation based on his belief system, his values.  It inspired him to do what he thought was right.  Our belief systems come from the things we are taught all our lives and they shape us.  Interestingly, people from the same faith and the same background come to different conclusions.  We have to respect others who follow their conscience in doing what is right, even if it is different than ones own idea about what is right.  Not attack them, belittle them, insult them.  Apparently, Bill O’Reilly lacks that kind of human decency.

I wonder what fuels a person to have such hatred toward another person?  I might disagree with some people and think they are wrong.  But I don’t feel that sense of hatred.  I’m not filled with hatred for them.

Fox News (which is not about the news)

Not long ago I posted an article about my encounter with Fox News where I called it Kafkaesque news. At the time, I had known nothing about Fox “News.”  I just encountered it while eating lunch.  I remember thinking how bizarre it seemed.  I couldn’t tell if I was seeing a program that was meant to be a commentary on the news or what.  Why were giving the indication that this was the news, on their program?  I thought, maybe it is a parady.  Maybe the characters, the anchormen and anchorwomen, wanted us to laugh at them… like a script on Saturday Night Live, which can be bizarre in the humor department as well.

Sometimes later, it started to seem to me that they were trying to present this as actual news, as an actual news program.  Surely no one would believe that they were getting the news – a true representation of who, what, where and when.  Sure there are commentaries on news topics but when you are presenting the news, you just tell who, what, when and where.

Since that time, it has become obvious that they want to present their program, Fox News, as actual news reporting.  I don’t understand though certain things.  They use the words Fair and Balanced.  Clearly they are not even remotely fair or balanced.  Surely it is obvious that opinions and commentary are not true representations of what is happening in the world.  It is very strange to cut off, insult, yell at, belittle or shame someone that has a different view or perspective on this.  That’s just mean and cruel and very malicious and unethical.   You just don’t do things like that no matter who you are or what.  I certainly would not want to do that to anyone if they disagreed with me.

That’s the thing, I do want to understand how and why a person feels the way they do.  I’m honestly interested.

Anyway, I know that my comments of criticism about Fox News will be poorly received because one can recognize that my views are different…  my ideas.  Indeed, I cannot deny that the things I have seen and heard on Fox News are honestly offensive to my values, my morals – my ideas of right and wrong.  My beliefs and morals are motivated by my Christian faith…  Some people have the same faith but come to different conclusions.  This is curious and confusing.  I don’t mean that because I am claiming to be right.  It’s just curious.  My beliefs and values are very genuine and very well thought out.

I was just watching the movie “Outfoxed,” which was about the Fox News program.  I was just catching some clips of Bill O’Reilly interviewing a person.  I was shocked.  What a despicable person this Bill O’Reilly is.  He was yelling at the guy.  Insulting him.  Cutting him off.  Showing disdain for him.  How could he speak to a guest this way?!!!   What is his problem?  I was sick and in tears for this man.  He had lost his father in 9-11 and now was protesting the war and speaking about his concern that the US was beginning to look like a terrorist nation themselves.  This Bill even brought in his mother into the conversation.  I felt a profound sense of love and compassion for this man being attacked by Bill O’Reilly.  I honestly feel that what he did was just wrong and offensive.  I felt righteous, moral indignation.

People with different morals, values and beliefs are humans too.  I feel that I am a good person with strong morals.  So, certain things are going to offend me.  Over my lifetime, influenced by family, friends, faith, I’ve developed a moral conscience.

More to follow…
